THE SEXUAL NEEDS OF PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES – PHYSICAL/PRACTICAL NEEDS (CASE)

Alan Green, a 30-year-old rugby player, had a serious accident which resulted in full length amputation of his leg just below the hip. Since his accident he had been unable to make love to his wife due to impotence.

Alan was very stressed and uncomfortable when he arrived for the consultation wiht the doctor, sweating and fidgeting. He was concerned about his problem. When he was encouraged to talk he said how devastated he was at the loss of his job as a scaffolder and his loss of rugby. There were major changes in his life, with his wife becoming the breadwinner and him doing the housework. When he attempted to make love he could not do it, and he was anxious about how his wife would view him. He felt demeaned by having to hop to the other twin bed when he had taken his artificial limb off.
