RED, SCALY PATCHES

Description and Possible Medical Problems

Sometimes your skin may turn red due to nervousness or stress. The redness may last for a few minutes or a few hours.

However, if you develop solid red, scaly plaques on the trunk of your body that are very sharply defined and scaly in appearance, chances are you have psoriasis. Psoriasis is easy to diagnose because the borders between the normal and affected skin are usually very distinct.

Psoriasis can also affect your elbows the palms of your hands, and the soles of your feet, but it is usually does not provoke itching.

Treatment

The primary treatments for psoriasis have come a long way since my days in medical school. Back then, coal tar, special lamps, and steroid solutions were the norm- Today, these treatments do have their place, but when a small area of the body is affected, for instance, the elbows, a steroid cream such as Diprolene might be enough. If the psoriasis spreads across the trunk, however, you may need to schedule weekly sessions under special lamps that can help heal the lesions.
